Common Questions About Seeing a Therapist
I often get asked questions about therapy so I thought I would post a blog that offers answers to some common questions…
Is therapy right for me?
Such a great question!
In it’s essence, it feels like the question speaks to – can you help me? Which is a personal, meaningful and important question…making the decision to see a therapist an individual choice. There is no right or wrong answer. It’s more about what’s right for you at this time.
You may have been thinking about possibly seeing a therapist for a while, but haven’t been ready to call and schedule an appointment. It may take a while to decide if making the call and scheduling an appointment is right for you.
People come to therapy for many different reasons.
Here’s a snap shot of some areas therapy can help with:
- Sometimes it’s to address relationship issues.
- Sometimes it’s to address family issues.
- Sometimes it’s a place to be able to decompress and talk about daily life struggles and stressors.
- Sometimes it’s a place to talk about unexpected changes and losses.
- Sometimes it’s about personal growth and self exploration.
I believe therapy is right for anyone who is interested.
Do I really need therapy? I can usually handle my problems.
Life is about relationships and as relational human beings, seeking support is a natural behavior.
It is a sign of courage and inner strength, one that shows sincere compassion toward oneself when times are difficult.
Challenging times happen. And during these times, seeking extra support can be a loving and compassionate gift that you give to yourself.
What is therapy like?
Sessions with me are 50 minutes. Longer 80 minute sessions are available, if needed.
I often spend the first session getting to know more about you, what brings you in to see me, and to begin learning about your background and history.
There is incredible power in people’s stories and I like to offer the first session as an opportunity to begin learning about your unique story and what makes you you.
If we are meeting for couple therapy, the first session is spent discussing your relationship history, what brings you therapy now, what goals or expectations you have, and to begin learning about your relationship story.
Therapy can be short-term, focusing on a specific issue, or longer-term, addressing more complex issues or ongoing personal growth.
I hope this helps answer any initial questions you may have.
