What Questions to Ask a Marital Therapist
Thinking about Marriage Counseling? Here are some key questions to ask a marital therapist.
How do you work with couples during marriage counseling sessions?
Knowing how a marital therapist works with couples during sessions is so important. Will they be seeing you the whole time together as a couple? Will they want to see you individually for a session or two during your work together?
How does the marital therapist determine whether change is happening?
Asking your potential marital therapist how he/she determines what is needed for each couple is very important. Each couple is unique and has specific and unique needs and knowing how the marriage counselor assesses change is important. Marital therapists should be able to explain this in a way that’s meaningful and impactful for you.
How Often Is Marriage Counseling Required
Each couple comes to marriage counseling for different reasons. And each couples’ needs are different. So, there is not a one size fits all answer to this question.
Some couples may benefit from weekly consistent sessions while others may want to space sessions out. It all depends on your specific needs which is why this is important to talk through with any marital therapist you are considering seeing for marriage counseling.
Each marital therapist will approach this differently so make sure you have this discussion ahead of time.
Online Marital Therapy
Some marriage counselors offer online therapy for their clients. Online therapy sessions can be very helpful for busy couples and for couples where one or both of you travel often making face to face office visits difficult. Online therapy offers you the convenience of therapy in the privacy of your own home.
If online marital sessions are of interest to you, talk with your potential marital therapist to see if this could be an option.
